HDFC Bank CEO search: Lender looks to hire headhunter

HDFC Bank is rushing to hire a global headhunter to find a new CEO. This follows the surprise news that current chief Sashidhar Jagdishan will not seek a new term.

HDFC Bank is moving fast to find a new leader. The bank is looking to hire a professional search firm (a company that helps find top executives) as early as this week. This news comes after the current CEO, Sashidhar Jagdishan, decided not to seek reappointment. Jagdishan has been with the bank for 30 years, and his decision to leave has caught many by surprise. The bank's board is now under pressure to find a successor before his term ends on October 26.

Reports suggest that HDFC Bank is talking to top headhunters like Egon Zehnder to speed up the process. The new CEO will have a big job ahead. The bank's stock price has fallen by 28% this year, which is much worse than the 4% drop seen in the Nifty Bank Index. Investors are worried, and the new chief will need to win back their trust and improve the bank's performance in the market.

Inside the bank, many eyes are on Deputy Managing Director Kaizad Bharucha. Analysts say he is the strongest internal candidate because he has spent three decades at the firm and manages both retail and wholesale banking. However, there is a technical problem. RBI rules say a full-time director or CEO can only serve for 15 years straight. Since Bharucha has already been on the board for 12 years, he might not be able to complete a full three-year term as the top boss.

This leadership change comes at a difficult time for India's largest private lender. Earlier in March, the bank faced a crisis when former Chairman Atanu Chakraborty left the firm. He had raised concerns about certain "practices" at the bank. Although an independent legal review later found no evidence to support his claims, the event still hurt the bank's image. Major international investors like Blackrock and Vanguard are watching these developments very closely.

For bank officers and aspirants, this is a major event in the Indian banking industry. The transition at the top of HDFC Bank usually sets the tone for the entire private banking sector. If the bank picks an internal candidate, it shows they value their own talent pool. If they pick an outsider, it could mean the board wants to bring in fresh ideas and a new way of working to fix the recent stock price issues.

The next step is for the board to finalize the search firm and shortlist names. Once a candidate is chosen, the bank must get final approval from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). Everyone is waiting to see if the bank will choose a veteran who knows the HDFC culture or a new face from outside to lead them through these tough times.
