National Payments Corporation of India seeks approval to set up ‘techfin’ centre in GIFT City
NPCI is moving toward a major presence in GIFT City by applying for a new unit. This step marks a massive shift for India's digital payment giant into global tech services.
The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has officially applied to set up a new 'Techfin' unit in GIFT City, Gujarat. NPCI is the backbone of our digital banking, managing UPI (Unified Payments Interface) and RuPay. By moving into the International Financial Services Centre (IFSC), NPCI wants to grow its footprint beyond domestic payments. This move is part of a plan to turn GIFT City into a global hub for financial technology services.
NPCI plans to set up this unit on the 18th floor of the new IFSCA headquarters building. The office will cover about 474 square metres in the Special Economic Zone (SEZ). To start, they plan to hire 25 professionals, keeping a healthy balance of 13 men and 12 women. This unit will function as a branch office, and all the money for this project will come directly from NPCI’s head office.
The term 'Techfin' refers to technology companies that provide digital solutions to banks and financial firms. NPCI will operate under the new IFSCA TechFin and Ancillary Services Regulations of 2025. These rules allow tech firms to provide support services to banks, insurance companies, and capital market players working out of the GIFT IFSC. It is a new way for technology to drive major financial decisions and operations.
NPCI is not alone in this journey. Other big names like Infosys, Cognizant, Wipro, and HCL Technologies have already started their techfin centres in GIFT City. So far, about 18 different companies have applied or received permission to start. These companies focus on creating software for wealth management, insurance, and global banking. It shows that GIFT City is becoming the top spot for financial innovation in India.
For bank officers and aspirants, this is a big deal. The growth of techfin in India is expected to create over 50,000 high-skilled jobs in the coming years. As the NPCI moves to GIFT City, it will likely develop new tools that will eventually filter down to the local bank branches we work in. These tools will help in cross-border payments (sending money between countries) and better digital banking security for our customers.
Customers also stand to gain because this hub aims for cross-border innovation. If NPCI masters techfin services in an international zone like GIFT City, Indian customers might soon find it much easier and cheaper to send and receive money globally. It strengthens India’s position as a world leader in payment technology.
Looking ahead, we should watch for the official approval of NPCI’s application. Once the 25-member team starts working, we may see new technologies being tested that could change how UPI works internationally. GIFT City is quickly turning from a dream project into a real powerhouse that every Indian banker must keep an eye on.
