Global Fintech Fest 2026 Live Updates: PM Modi calls for deeper UPI links with overseas payment systems

Prime Minister Modi has proposed a major plan to connect UPI with local payment systems in foreign countries. This move aims to make international money transfers as easy as domestic payments.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently inaugurated the Global Fintech Fest (GFF) 2026 at the Jio World Centre in Mumbai. The event, which runs from September 8 to 11, brings together top leaders like Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra. The main focus of the Prime Minister's speech was the global expansion of India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI). He wants to take UPI beyond just being available abroad to actually linking it directly with the domestic payment systems of other nations.

This new focus on interoperability (the ability of different computer systems to work together) is a big step for Indian banking. Currently, UPI is available in some countries, but linking it directly to foreign local systems would mean cross-border transactions could happen instantly. PM Modi believes this will make sending money across borders as seamless as making a local payment at a grocery store in India. For bank officers, this means preparing for a future where international remittances are faster and much cheaper.

During the fest, RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra praised the role of fintech companies in helping small businesses. He noted that fintechs are bridging the MSME credit gap (the difference between the money small businesses need and what they actually get). By using new ways to check if a borrower is safe, fintechs are giving loans to small businesses that were previously invisible to traditional bank underwriting models (the process of deciding if a borrower is creditworthy).

Private players are also launching new tech tools at the event. BharatPe introduced 'BharatPe Agentic AI,' which uses advanced artificial intelligence to help merchants manage their businesses. They also launched a 'Credit Coach' tool. This tool uses AI to help users understand their credit scores better and learn how to borrow money responsibly. This shows that AI is moving from being a simple chatbot to a core part of how financial services are delivered to the common man.

The GFF 2026 is also looking at future technologies like tokenization (replacing sensitive data with unique symbols) and quantum technology. These technologies are expected to make banking much more secure against hackers. As these tools become common, bank staff will need to upgrade their skills to handle AI-driven products and more complex digital security measures.

For customers, these changes mean better access to credit and easier ways to send money to relatives living abroad. For the banking community, the message from the government is clear: digital innovation is no longer an option but a necessity. Bankers should watch for new RBI guidelines on cross-border UPI links, as these will change how NRI accounts and remittance services are handled in the coming months.
