India's UPI to integrate with Indonesia's payment system, says PM Modi

India and Indonesia have agreed to link their digital payment systems to help travelers and businesses. This major update will allow UPI users to make easy payments while visiting Indonesia.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto have announced a major plan to connect India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI) with Indonesia's local payment system. This news came during PM Modi's visit to Jakarta, where both leaders met for bilateral talks (meetings between two countries). The goal is to make cross-border payments easy for everyone. This move will help in building stronger trade ties and helping the tourism sector. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw also shared this big update on social media.

According to the agreement, the two countries will work on QR payment linkages. This means that soon, an Indian tourist in Indonesia can simply scan a local QR code using a UPI app to pay for lunch or shopping. This reduces the need to carry physical foreign currency or expensive credit cards. President Subianto confirmed that this collaboration is a priority for both nations as they look to modernize their financial technology (fintech) networks.

Apart from UPI, the two countries also celebrated the launch of the Indonesia Open Network (ION). This new system is based on India’s Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), which is a platform that allows small sellers to compete with big e-commerce giants. By sharing this technology, India is helping Indonesia build its own Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI). DPI refers to digital blocks like Aadhaar and UPI that help a country provide 24/7 services to its citizens.

This integration is part of India's larger mission to make UPI a global name. Currently, UPI is already working in countries like Singapore, the UAE, Mauritius, Sri Lanka, and France. India has signed agreements with 23 different countries to share its digital technology. For Indian bank officers, this is a proud moment as the technology developed in India is now becoming a world standard. It shows that India is a leader in the global digital payments ecosystem.

For customers and businesses, the benefits are clear. Small and medium businesses (SMBs) will find it easier to trade because payments will be faster and cheaper. Indian migrants living in Indonesia will also find it easier to send money or manage their daily expenses. It cuts down the high fees usually charged for international money transfers. This move will likely increase the volume of digital transactions processed by Indian banks and payment service providers.

Looking forward, the integration will follow the successful model seen in Singapore and the UAE. Bankers should watch for official circulars from the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) regarding technical rules and exchange rates for these transactions. As UPI grows across the globe, it strengthens India's digital economy and makes traveling abroad much more convenient for every Indian citizen.
