The bank confirmed an internal review is underway. “In line with our policies, an internal review into this matter is currently underway to gather and evaluate all relevant facts,” a spokesperson said. “Appropriate action will be taken based on the findings, once the review is complete.” The probe’s findings were reported to senior management and certain board members earlier this year, and both executives have been formally informed, though no disciplinary action has been announced.

The disclosure arrives at a particularly difficult moment for India’s largest private sector bank by market value. Veteran ICICI Group executive Anup Bagchi is set to assume the role of chief executive on October 27, inheriting a bank navigating multiple leadership upheavals simultaneously. Incumbent CEO Sashidhar Jagdishan is stepping down after six years. Deputy Managing Director Kaizad Bharucha, one of the bank’s longest-serving executives, has also announced his departure by end of December. In March, then-chairman Atanu Chakraborty abruptly resigned citing differences with certain internal practices, though a subsequent independent legal review found his concerns unsubstantiated.

Trading volumes were elevated at 255.76 lakh shares by mid-session, nearly double Wednesday’s pace, with sellers outweighing buyers 55 per cent to 45 per cent. The stock is now down nearly 30 per cent year-to-date and has underperformed the Nifty 50 by approximately 17 percentage points over the past year. Bank Nifty opened sharply lower Thursday near 54,734, with momentum indicators weakening into bearish territory, offering little sector-level cushion for the stock.
