HDFC Bank, Ujjivan SFB start CEO search amid leadership changes in private banks
Top private and small finance banks are rushing to find new leaders after several CEOs announced sudden exits. This search involves big names like HDFC Bank and Kotak Mahindra Bank.
Big changes are coming to the top floors of India's private banks. Major lenders like HDFC Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Ujjivan Small Finance Bank (SFB), and Fino Payments Bank are all searching for new Managing Directors (MD) and Chief Executive Officers (CEOs). This wave of leadership changes comes at a time when these banks are trying to grow faster and manage strict rules from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
The biggest news is from HDFC Bank. The current boss, Sashidhar Jagdishan, has decided he does not want to be reappointed when his term ends on October 26. He has been with the bank for nearly 30 years. His time as CEO saw some tough challenges. While he successfully helped lift an RBI ban on new credit cards in 2022, the bank has recently faced issues. These include fines regarding high-value deposits from a Maharashtra state body and problems with selling investment products to NRI clients in Dubai.
At Kotak Mahindra Bank, the search is also moving fast. The current CEO, Ashok Vaswani, surprised many by backing out of his extension in June. His term was supposed to last until late 2026, but the bank is now looking at internal candidates to take over early. Similarly, Ujjivan SFB needs a new leader because their MD, Sanjeev Nautiyal, asked for early retirement just months after joining from SBI. Fino Payments Bank is also in the final stages of picking a new head after their former CEO was involved in legal issues related to GST laws.
For bank officers, it is important to understand how a CEO is picked. First, the bank's Board of Directors shortlists a few names. These names are then sent to the RBI. The RBI does a 'fit and proper' check (a detailed background check) to ensure the person is honest and capable. Only after the RBI gives its nod (approval) can the new CEO take charge. This process ensures that the people running our banks are reliable.
These leadership changes are happening because the RBI is becoming very strict about 'governance' (how a bank is managed). HDFC Bank, for example, saw its Chairman resign earlier this year citing ethics concerns. When top leaders change, it often leads to new strategies for the staff on the ground. Aspirants and current officers should watch these appointments closely, as the new bosses will decide the future goals for deposits, loans, and digital banking.
In the coming months, we will see if these banks choose 'insiders' (people already working in the bank) or 'outsiders' (leaders from other banks). The RBI's final decision on the names sent by HDFC and Kotak will be the next big event to watch. For now, HDFC Bank says it will find a successor 'well within time' to ensure a smooth transition for its customers and employees.
