UCO Bank, ScoreMe launch GST Smart for digital MSME lending

UCO Bank and ScoreMe Solutions have launched a new digital tool called GST Smart for MSME loans. This technology uses GST data to help bank officers make faster credit decisions.

UCO Bank has partnered with ScoreMe Solutions to launch 'GST Smart,' a new digital lending tool. This tool is designed to improve how the bank lends money to Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). By using GST intelligence (data from tax filings), the bank can now look at real business activity before giving a loan. This makes the process faster and more data-driven for bank officers.

For a long time, MSMEs in India have struggled to get formal bank credit. Many small businesses have thin credit histories (little record of past borrowing) or limited financial documents. This makes it hard for bank managers to assess their repayment capacity. GST Smart solves this by pulling data from GST filings, which are updated regularly. This gives the bank a fresh view of how the business is performing right now.

The system was built by ScoreMe and focuses on workflow orchestration (organizing the steps of a task). It automates certain parts of the loan journey based on the bank's own rules. Even though the system is digital, the bank stays in total control. The tool works within the bank's existing credit policies and approval frameworks (the set rules for giving loans), ensuring that safety standards are not ignored.

Rajendra Kumar Saboo, Managing Director of UCO Bank, stated that GST intelligence provides a current view of business activity. He emphasized that this technology makes the lending journey efficient while keeping decisions within the bank's defined policies. The goal is to strengthen the information available to credit officers during the assessment stage, leading to better quality loans.

Shashank Sharma, Co-Founder of ScoreMe, explained that the platform helps lenders move away from just collecting stacks of documents. Instead, it creates a 'connected decision context,' which means all the relevant data is available in one place. The objective is not to replace the human judgment of a banker but to make the process faster and more consistent across different branches.

For bank officers, this means less manual work in verifying business turnover and compliance. The system uses automated decisioning to flag issues or confirm strengths based on lender-approved rules. However, human-review pathways are still available. This means if a loan case is complex, a bank officer can still step in to review it manually, ensuring the bank does not lose its 'institutional judgment.'

Indian bankers should watch how this impacts their MSME portfolios. As GST data becomes a primary source for credit assessment, the speed of loan processing is expected to increase. This could help UCO Bank grow its loan book while keeping risks low. It also helps small business customers get funds quickly without running around with physical paperwork.

In the future, more banks are likely to adopt such digital tools. As India moves toward a digital economy, using real-time tax data for lending will become the standard. Bankers should get comfortable with these digital dashboards, as they will soon be the main way to evaluate a borrower’s creditworthiness (the ability to pay back a loan).
