HDFC Bank weighing deputy MD Bharucha, outsider for CEO, sources say
HDFC Bank is preparing to pick a new CEO as Sashidhar Jagdishan plans to retire this October. The bank is currently looking at both internal and external names for the top post.
HDFC Bank, the largest private sector bank in India, has started the process to find its next leader. The current CEO, Sashidhar Jagdishan, will retire at the end of his second term in October. The bank is now weighing its options, with Deputy Managing Director Kaizad Bharucha emerging as a top internal choice for the position.
According to the rules set by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), banks must submit more than one name for the CEO post. Because of this, HDFC Bank is also searching for an external candidate (someone from outside the bank). The RBI is the final authority that approves these top appointments to ensure banks are managed well and follow all rules.
Kaizad Bharucha is a veteran at the bank. He currently manages both the retail (loans to individuals) and wholesale (loans to big companies) businesses. Under RBI rules, a whole-time director can serve for a maximum of 15 years. Since Bharucha is not due to retire until 2029, he is legally eligible to take over the top role if the board and the regulator agree.
This leadership change comes at a difficult time for the bank. HDFC Bank has faced several months of stress, and its share price has dropped about 27 per cent this year. A major reason for this was the sudden departure of Chairman Atanu Chakraborty in March. He had raised concerns about the bank's internal practices, although a legal review later found no evidence of wrongdoing.
Investors are also worried about the bank's performance after its massive merger with HDFC Ltd in 2023. Many felt the benefits of this merger were not appearing as fast as expected. Additionally, the board recently penalized Jagdishan and three other officials over issues related to the pricing of large deposits (bulk money kept by customers), adding to the pressure on current leadership.
For bank officers and aspirants, this is a major event to watch. HDFC Bank sets the standard for the private banking industry in India. A change in the CEO usually leads to a change in strategy or work culture. If a Deputy MD like Bharucha takes over, there might be more stability. If an outsider is picked, the bank might see new ways of working.
The bank has stated it will fast-track the search process to ensure a smooth transition. Everyone in the banking sector is now waiting to see which names the board will finally send to the RBI. The final decision will influence how the bank competes with rivals like ICICI Bank and SBI in the coming years.
