SBI Card, Google Pay launch co-branded credit card for everyday digital spending

SBI Card and Google Pay have launched a new credit card for digital spenders. This partnership aims to change how Indian users earn rewards on their daily UPI and online purchases.

SBI Card has joined hands with Google Pay to launch the 'Google Pay Flex SBI Card'. This new co-branded credit card is built to help customers get more benefits from their daily digital spending. By combining the credit expertise of SBI Card with the huge user base of Google Pay, both companies hope to capture a larger share of the fast-growing Indian digital payments market.

The main highlight of this card is its reward system called 'Stars'. Users can earn these points on almost all daily expenses like buying groceries, paying electricity bills, booking travel, or shopping online. According to the launch details, cardholders can earn up to 18,000 Stars every year. The rewards are linked to how much a person spends each month. A key benefit is that one Star is equal to Re 1, and users can use these Stars instantly to pay for things directly inside the Google Pay app.

Bankers should note that the card is available on two networks: RuPay and Visa. The RuPay variant is very important because it can be linked to UPI (Unified Payments Interface). This allows customers to use their credit limit to pay merchants through UPI QR codes, which is becoming the most popular way to pay in India. Both the RuPay and Visa versions support tokenisation (a process that replaces card details with a unique code for safety), allowing for secure 'tap-to-pay' transactions using a smartphone.

For customers who like digital tools, this card offers a completely paperless experience. Everything from applying for the card to tracking rewards and managing the account happens inside the Google Pay app. If a customer finds it hard to pay their full bill, they can opt for easy EMIs (Equated Monthly Installments). This 'buy now, pay later' flexibility is a major selling point for young professionals and small-town shoppers who want manageable monthly payments.

The card is priced to be affordable for the general public. It has a joining fee and an annual renewal fee of ₹499 plus taxes. However, the bank will waive (cancel) the renewal fee if the customer spends more than ₹1 lakh in a year. To attract new applicants, SBI Card is offering welcome benefits worth ₹1,000, which includes a mix of cashback and bonus Stars after joining.

For bank officers, this launch shows the growing trend of 'embedded finance,' where banking products are sold directly through popular non-bank apps. By using Google Pay’s ecosystem, SBI Card can reach millions of customers without needing them to visit a physical branch. This partnership will likely increase the number of credit card users in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities where Google Pay is already widely used for simple money transfers.

In the coming months, the industry will watch how this card competes with other popular co-branded cards like the Amazon Pay ICICI card or the Flipkart Axis Bank card. The success of the Google Pay Flex SBI Card will depend on how easily users can earn and spend their 'Stars'. As digital credit becomes more common, such partnerships will be crucial for banks to maintain their market share in the plastic-money business.
