AU Small Finance Bank bolsters top deck with two senior hires

AU Small Finance Bank has hired two senior veterans to lead their commercial and risk departments. These moves prepare the bank for its big jump to becoming a Universal Bank soon.

AU Small Finance Bank (AU SFB) is getting ready for a big change. The bank has hired two very senior leaders, Anil Agarwal and Amol Padhye, to join its top team. This comes at a time when the bank has received in-principle approval (initial permission) from the RBI to become a Universal Bank. A Universal Bank can offer more products and services than a Small Finance Bank, making this a huge step for the lender.

Anil Agarwal will join as the Senior Executive Group Head for Commercial and Institutional Banking. He has nearly 30 years of experience in the banking sector. Before this, he spent over 20 years at Axis Bank in various senior roles. He is a qualified Chartered Accountant and a Cost Accountant. At AU SFB, he will manage big business areas like wholesale liabilities (large deposits from companies), cash management, and capital markets.

Amol Padhye has been appointed as the Chief Risk Officer (CRO). He is also a Chartered Accountant with 23 years of experience in managing risks. He has worked with top names like HDFC Bank and EY. As the CRO, he will be in charge of making sure the bank follows all rules and manages its credit and market risks properly. His role is very important because the RBI has very strict rules for Universal Banks.

Sanjay Agarwal, who is the Founder and CEO of the bank, said these new hires will help the bank grow in a disciplined way. He wants to make sure the bank creates long-term value for everyone involved. The bank is currently India’s largest Small Finance Bank. Its total deposits stand at ₹1,57,727 crore and its loan portfolio (total money lent out) is ₹1,44,250 crore as of June 2026.

Even with this good news, the bank's stock price dropped a little bit. On Tuesday, the stock was trading at ₹1,037.50 on the NSE, which is down about 2.02 percent. However, over the last year, the bank's stock has performed very well. It has gained over 45 percent, which is much higher than the Nifty Bank index which only grew by 2.32 percent in the same period.

For bank officers and aspirants, this news shows how AU SFB is transforming itself. By hiring experts from giant banks like Axis and HDFC, they are building a strong foundation to compete with the biggest players in the industry. As the bank scales up to a Universal Bank, there will be more focus on regulatory readiness (being ready to follow strict RBI rules) and enterprise-wide risk management.
