Indian Bank to set up office in Dubai to expand foreign operations

Indian Bank is planning to expand its global footprint by opening a new office in Dubai. The bank also aims to grow its domestic network and hire thousands of employees.

Indian Bank has announced major expansion plans to grow both its foreign and domestic business. The bank's board has officially approved the opening of a representative office in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. This move is designed to reach the large Indian population living in West Asia. According to MD and CEO Binod Kumar, nearly 33 percent of the working population in Dubai is Indian, offering a huge opportunity for NRI (Non-Resident Indian) banking services.

Currently, Indian Bank already operates a full-service branch in Singapore and two branches in Sri Lanka, located in Colombo and Jaffna. It also runs an IFSC Banking Unit at GIFT City in Gandhinagar. The GIFT City branch acts as an offshore unit (a branch that deals in foreign currency) and has been performing well by participating in syndicated loans (loans where a group of banks come together to lend a large amount to a single borrower).

Beyond Dubai, the bank is looking at other international markets to grow its brand. The management is currently exploring the possibility of entering Malaysia and Indonesia. These locations also have significant Indian communities and trade links with India. The bank is now in the process of getting the necessary regulatory approvals from the Reserve Bank of India and foreign authorities to proceed with these plans.

On the home front, Indian Bank is focusing on the central and western parts of India. The bank plans to open 100 new domestic branches during the current financial year. This follows a similar expansion last year when 100 branches were added. On August 15, which was the bank’s foundation day, 15 new branches were already inaugurated. As of June 30, 2024, the bank had a total of 6,003 domestic branches.

To support this growth, the bank will increase its staff strength significantly. Indian Bank plans to hire about 2,500 new personnel this year. This recruitment drive includes specialist officers (bankers with specific expertise like IT, Law, or Credit) and general staff. The new hiring is needed to manage the growing business volume and to fill vacancies created by employees who are retiring from service.

For bank officers, this expansion means more opportunities for foreign postings and career growth in new regions. The bank has become much stronger in the eastern region and Uttar Pradesh after the merger with Allahabad Bank in 2020. Now, by moving into new international markets and strengthening western India, the bank aims to compete better with other large public sector banks. Customers can expect better access to services, especially NRIs looking for seamless banking between Dubai and India.
