BRICS nations discuss linking payment systems and CBDCs, RBI chief says

RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das shared new plans for BRICS nations to link their payment systems and digital currencies. These updates aim to change how India handles international money transfers.

Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das recently spoke at an event in Mumbai about the future of global banking. He revealed that BRICS nations are currently discussing ways to link their fast payment systems. The BRICS group includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, along with new member countries. The main goal is to make sending money across borders much cheaper and faster for everyone involved.

One of the biggest topics on the table is the use of Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs). A CBDC is a digital version of a country's official currency issued by the central bank. The RBI is pushing for these digital currencies to be connected across the BRICS nations. This proposal is expected to be a major part of the agenda when India hosts the BRICS summit in 2026. The governor mentioned that while various options are being discussed, the focus remains on reducing the high costs of international trade.

The RBI is also working hard to internationalize the Indian Rupee. This means the central bank wants the Rupee to be used more often in global trade instead of just relying on the US Dollar. By promoting local currencies for cross-border payments, India can protect its economy from global currency fluctuations. This shift would allow Indian businesses to settle trades more easily with partner countries using our own currency.

Apart from payments, the Governor spoke about the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in banking. He told Indian bank officers that they cannot just watch from the sidelines. He described AI as a powerful tool that should be used to improve banking services, not just a risk to be avoided. However, he warned that banks must be careful. He urged lenders to list every AI model they use and create strict rules approved by their boards to manage these technologies safely.

For Indian bank employees, this news means the future of banking will be more digital and global. If these payment links are successful, bank staff will handle more transactions involving the 'e-Rupee' and direct Rupee-based trade. There will also be a bigger focus on learning how AI works within the branch and back-office operations. The RBI believes that innovation and safety must go hand-in-hand to keep the financial system strong.

Customers will also see big changes in the coming years. If the BRICS payment linkage happens, sending money to family abroad or paying for foreign goods could become as simple as using UPI. It would remove the middleman and lower the fees usually charged by global wire services. As India prepares for the 2026 summit, bankers should watch for new guidelines on digital currency and AI governance from the central bank.
