UPI transactions will remain free for consumers, says Phonepe CEO

PhonePe CEO Sameer Nigam has clarified the future of UPI transaction fees for regular users. Banks and fintech firms are now discussing how to fund the system's growing safety needs.

Sameer Nigam, the CEO of PhonePe, has cleared the air regarding UPI charges. He confirmed on social media that UPI payments will remain free for all consumers. This statement comes at a time when many people were worried that they might have to pay for using UPI in the future. Nigam explained that the current talk about money is not about charging users, but about making the system stronger.

The UPI ecosystem is now handling a massive load of over 9,000 transactions every single second. As the volume of digital payments grows, the cost of keeping the system running also goes up. The CEO mentioned that banks, fintech companies, the NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India), and the RBI (Reserve Bank of India) have worked hard for ten years to build this platform. Now, they need a sustainable business model to keep it going.

A major part of the expenses goes toward fighting frauds and cyber-attacks. As more people use UPI, more criminals try to target the system. To protect the hard-earned money of Indians, companies must spend a lot on high-tech security and expert teams. This investment is necessary to bring 'bad actors' (criminals) to justice and keep the network safe for every common man.

Another big challenge is 'resilience' (the ability of a system to stay working even during heavy load). With millions of Indians making daily purchases, the servers must never go down. Maintaining this infrastructure requires huge resources every day. PhonePe, which is planning its IPO (Initial Public Offering - when a company first sells shares to the public), believes that the ecosystem must find ways to fund these technological needs.

Innovation is the third key area requiring funds. The UPI system needs to stay ahead with new features to help both small shopkeepers and big businesses. The goal is to ensure the platform remains 'cutting-edge' (using the latest and most advanced technology) for many years. All these costs—technology, security, and people—are currently being managed by the companies in the ecosystem.

For bank officers, this news is important because it highlights the rising costs of digital banking. While customers enjoy free services, banks and payment apps are the ones investing in the backend. The focus for the next few years will be 'future-proofing' the system. This means building a foundation that can handle even higher traffic without breaking or becoming vulnerable to hackers.

Indian customers can continue to use their favorite UPI apps without fear of hidden costs for now. The industry is looking for ways to fund these operations without putting a burden on the end-user. The conversation is about long-term survival and service to the Indian economy, rather than immediate profits from transaction fees.

Looking ahead, the industry will watch how the government and RBI support these infrastructure costs. As digital payments become the backbone of India, the need for a balanced funding model will remain a top priority for all stakeholders in the banking and fintech space.
