Jagdishan decides to not seek re-appointment as HDFC Bank Chief

HDFC Bank chief Sashidhar Jagdishan has officially decided not to seek another term as the MD and CEO. The bank's board is now rushing to find a new leader before late 2026.

Sashidhar Jagdishan, the MD and CEO of HDFC Bank, has confirmed he will not seek re-appointment. During a recent meeting, the Board of Directors of India’s largest private sector bank noted his decision to step down. Despite the Board trying to convince him to stay, Jagdishan stood by his choice. He is set to retire from the bank when business hours close on October 26, 2026.

This decision comes during a period of stress for the bank. The trouble started in March 2026 when the Part-Time Chairman, Atanu Chakraborty, resigned suddenly. Chakraborty mentioned that certain bank practices did not align with his personal ethics. Since then, the bank has faced several internal and external challenges regarding how it handles business and follows rules.

One major issue involves the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC). The bank was accused of disguising extra interest payments as marketing expenses to attract large deposits. In July 2026, a special committee found this to be a "business overreach" (going too far to get business). As a result, the bank issued warning letters and a fine of Rs 1 lakh each to Jagdishan and two other top executives.

Adding to the pressure, HDFC Bank is facing a possible class-action lawsuit (a case filed by a group of people) in the United States. Law firms there claim the bank made illegal payments worth Rs 45 crore to get deposits from the MSRDC. While HDFC Bank says the lawsuit has no merit and will defend itself, the controversy has clearly impacted the top leadership's stability.

The Board is now fast-tracking the search for a new CEO. Several big names are already being discussed by industry experts. These include HDFC Bank’s own Deputy MD Kaizad Bharucha and former Deputy MD Paresh Sukthankar. The shortlist might also include top bosses from State Bank of India (SBI) like Ashwini Kumar Tewari or Axis Bank’s CEO Amitabh Chaudhry. The final list will be sent to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for approval.

For bank officers and aspirants, this move marks the end of an era. Jagdishan took over in 2020 and led the bank through the massive merger with HDFC Limited. However, the recent fines and legal threats show that the RBI and global investors are watching compliance (following rules) very closely. The next CEO will need to focus heavily on governance to restore full confidence.

Customers do not need to worry about their accounts, as the bank stated its internal controls remain strong. The search for a successor will happen well before Jagdishan’s term ends to ensure a smooth transition. All eyes are now on the Board and the RBI to see who will lead India’s biggest private lender into its next chapter.
