SBI to hire 12,000 personnel, add 250 branches during FY27: Chairman Setty

SBI Chairman C S Setty has shared big plans for hiring and branch expansion this year. The bank will recruit thousands of new staff and open hundreds of new locations across India.

State Bank of India (SBI) is ready for a big growth phase this year. Chairman C S Setty announced that the bank plans to hire about 12,000 new employees. This recruitment will cover both the clerical cadre (junior associates) and the officer cadre (probationary officers). The bank wants to ensure it has enough people to handle retirements and new business needs.

This hiring plan follows a very busy previous year. In 2025-26, SBI hired over 25,600 people, including a large group of 1,500 specialist IT officers. This year, the bank does not need as many IT specialists, so the focus will be on general banking roles. As of March 2026, SBI has a massive workforce of over 2.45 lakh employees, making it one of the biggest employers in the country.

Along with hiring, SBI is expanding its physical presence. The Chairman said the bank will add about 200 to 250 new branches. Even though SBI already has a huge network, they are looking for 'white spaces' (areas where there is no bank nearby). They want to open branches in new housing colonies and busy commercial districts where people need banking services.

For staff already working at SBI, this means the workload might be shared with new joiners soon. For aspirants (people trying to get a job), this is great news as thousands of vacancies are opening up. The expansion also means more opportunities for promotions and transfers as new branches need managers and staff to run them.

Chairman Setty also talked about the bank's investments. SBI and its subsidiary, SBI Capital Markets, plan to sell a 1% stake in the National Stock Exchange (NSE). The NSE is coming out with a huge IPO (Initial Public Offering - when a company sells its shares to the public for the first time). This IPO is expected to be worth 30,000 crore rupees, which would make it the largest ever in India.

Apart from the NSE stake sale, the bank is not planning to sell stakes in its other subsidiaries (smaller companies owned by the bank) right now. Earlier, the bank successfully sold a 10% stake in SBI Mutual Fund. That sale was a huge hit with investors and was subscribed over 41 times.

Bankers should watch for official recruitment notifications on the SBI website. These will give exact dates for exams and interviews. The branch expansion will also be worth watching, as it shows SBI is still focusing on 'brick and mortar' (physical buildings) banking even as digital banking grows.
