Kotak Mahindra Bank recommends two internal candidates for CEO, sources say

Kotak Mahindra Bank has sent two names to the RBI for the top job. The bank is looking for a new leader to replace current CEO Ashok Vaswani.

Kotak Mahindra Bank is preparing for a big change in its top leadership. The bank has recommended two internal candidates to become the next Chief Executive Officer (CEO). According to news sources, the names submitted to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) are Anup Saha and Paritosh Kashyap. Both men are currently Executive Directors at the bank. This is a very important move for India's fourth-largest private lender.

The current CEO, Ashok Vaswani, has decided not to seek another term. He joined the bank in January 2024 but plans to leave when his term ends on December 31, 2026, due to personal reasons. Vaswani had a long career at global banks like Barclays and Citigroup before joining Kotak. He took over from the bank's founder, Uday Kotak, who led the institution for over twenty years and still holds a 26 percent stake (ownership share) in the bank.

The two candidates represent different parts of the bank's business. Anup Saha joined Kotak earlier this year after working at Bajaj Finance. He is currently in charge of the retail banking division, which deals with individual customers and small loans. Paritosh Kashyap is a long-time Kotak employee who manages the wholesale banking business. Wholesale banking involves providing financial services to large corporations and institutions rather than individuals.

In India, the RBI has strict rules for appointing bank heads. Banks must recommend at least two names for the CEO position. The RBI then reviews these names to see if they are fit for the role. The regulator can either pick one of the candidates or ask the bank to find new options if they are not satisfied. This process ensures that the person leading a major bank is qualified and trustworthy.

This leadership change comes at a critical time for Kotak Mahindra Bank. Under Vaswani, the bank set a goal to become the third-largest private bank in India based on after-tax profit (the money left after all expenses and taxes are paid). The new CEO will be expected to push this growth even further and maintain the bank's strong position in a competitive market. Investors seem interested in these developments, as the bank's shares recently gained 5 percent over five trading sessions.

For bank officers and job seekers, this news shows that Kotak is focusing on internal talent for its top roles. While Vaswani was an outside hire, both Saha and Kashyap are already part of the bank's senior team. The industry will now wait for the RBI's decision. The final choice will decide the future strategy of the bank and how it competes with other giants like HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank.
