"Turning point in India's digital payments journey": PM Modi hails 10 years of UPI

Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently celebrated the ten-year anniversary of the Unified Payments Interface. He called this milestone a major turning point for the digital payments journey of our country.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has officially marked the 10th anniversary of the Unified Payments Interface (UPI). In a post on the social media platform X, he called UPI a major turning point for India. He praised the massive scale and reach of the system. The PM also asked citizens to share how this technology has changed their daily lives and businesses over the last decade.

UPI was first launched by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) on August 25, 2016. It works under the watchful eye of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). It started small with a pilot program in April 2016 involving only 21 member banks. By August that year, banks put their UPI apps on the Google Play Store for the public to use. Later in December 2016, the government launched the BHIM app to speed up adoption.

The growth numbers provided by the Union Finance Ministry are truly massive. In the 2016-17 financial year, UPI saw only 1.78 crore transactions. By the 2025-26 period, this number jumped to over 24,162 crore transactions. This is an increase of almost 13,000 times in terms of volume. It shows how deeply the system has entered the lives of every Indian citizen, from big cities to small villages.

The total value of money moved via UPI has also skyrocketed. It went from just Rs 0.07 lakh crore in the first year to about Rs 314 lakh crore recently. This represents a 4,000-fold increase in value. For bank officers, this means a huge shift from cash handling to managing digital systems. UPI is a real-time system that lets users link multiple bank accounts to one single mobile app for instant transfers.

India is now taking this success to the global stage. UPI is currently accepted in 11 countries. Recently, Greece and the Maldives joined the list of nations using India’s real-time payment technology. This global expansion helps Indian travelers and strengthens India's position as a leader in fintech (financial technology). The system uses two-factor authentication (a two-step security check) and encryption to keep data safe.

For bankers, the regulatory side is also changing. The government updated the Payment and Settlement Systems Act (PSS Act) to manage how the system works. They introduced MDR (Merchant Discount Rate, which is a fee charged to shopkeepers for processing payments). Importantly, there are still no charges for regular customers making payments. This policy helps keep the system popular among the general public.

Looking ahead, bank aspirants should note how UPI integrates multiple services like fund transfers and merchant payments on one platform. The focus remains on security and making sure the system can handle even more traffic. As UPI continues to grow, it will likely include more features and reach more countries, making it the backbone of the Indian banking sector for years to come.
