UPI transactions reach record high of ₹29.9 lakh cr in July

Unified Payments Interface has set a massive new record in transaction value during the month of July. This latest data shows how digital payments are rapidly growing across every part of India.

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has released the latest data for July 2026. The Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has reached a new record high. Total transaction value for the month touched ₹29.88 lakh crore. This shows that more Indians are choosing digital methods over cash for their daily needs.

Looking at the numbers, the growth is quite significant. In terms of volume (number of transactions), July saw 23.66 billion transactions. This is higher than the 23.2 billion recorded in May and the 22.72 billion seen in June. When compared to the same month last year, the value of transactions has grown by 19 per cent. Last year in July, the value stood at ₹25.08 lakh crore.

NPCI is the main body that handles retail payments in India. It was started by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the Indian Banks’ Association (IBA). It manages the UPI system which allows people to send money instantly to friends or pay shopkeepers (merchants) using their mobile phones. This system is now the backbone of India's digital economy.

Experts like Anand Kumar Bajaj from PayNearby believe this growth is very positive. He mentioned that UPI is strengthening the digital payments ecosystem (the network of banks, apps, and users). However, he noted that banks and fintech companies must continue to build trust. It is important to make these tools easy to use for people in rural areas, often called Bharat, to ensure everyone is included in the banking system.

UPI is not just for India anymore. It is now live in ten countries. These include the UAE, Singapore, Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, France, Mauritius, and Qatar. This international reach helps with remittances (money sent home by Indians working abroad). It also makes India a global leader in the fintech (financial technology) space.

For bank officers and aspirants, these figures are very important. It means the workload on traditional bank counters for small cash deposits and withdrawals might decrease. However, the pressure on bank servers and digital infrastructure will increase. Bankers need to be ready to help customers with digital grievances (complaints) and ensure that digital literacy reaches every account holder.

Moving forward, the industry will watch if UPI can maintain this record-breaking pace. The focus will be on grassroots adoption. This means bringing people who still use only cash into the digital fold. As more countries accept UPI, Indian banks will play a bigger role in global payment settlements. This growth is a sign that the digital revolution in Indian banking is only getting stronger.
