novio, IOB launch co-branded RuPay credit card to widen access to formal credit
Indian Overseas Bank and fintech firm novio have launched a new RuPay credit card. This card aims to help first-time borrowers build their credit history using fixed deposit backing.
Indian Overseas Bank (IOB) has joined hands with consumer credit platform novio to launch a new co-branded RuPay credit card. This partnership was officially unveiled at the Global Fintech Fest held at the NPCI Pavilion. The main goal of this launch is to provide credit to people who are active on UPI but have never owned a credit card before. By using the RuPay network, this card will allow users to make credit payments through UPI apps.
The new card comes in two versions: RuPay Select and RuPay Platinum. One of the standout features of this product is that it offers an FD-backed credit facility. This means a customer can get a credit card against a Fixed Deposit (a safe investment where money is locked for a fixed time). This is very helpful for customers with no formal credit history (a record of how a person handles debt) as it allows them to build a credit bureau profile through regular and responsible usage.
The onboarding process for this card is entirely digital and instant. This removes the long paperwork usually associated with bank credit cards. The partnership combines the strong banking infrastructure and wide branch network of IOB with novio’s modern digital platform. The card is designed to appeal to younger, tech-savvy users who prefer managing their finances via mobile apps and reward ecosystems.
This launch is a big step for IOB as it seeks to expand its footprint in the retail credit market. Joydeep Dutta Roy, Executive Director of IOB, and Aditya Gupta, CEO of novio, believe that credit access should be simpler and more inclusive. By targeting the UPI-active crowd, the bank is tapping into a large pool of potential customers who already understand digital payments but lack access to traditional loans or credit lines.
For novio, which is operated by Credilio Financial Technologies, this partnership follows a successful Rs 100-crore Series A funding round. The company has big plans for the future. They aim to issue 50 lakh (5 million) credit cards over the next three years. A major part of their strategy is to reach customers in Tier-V cities (very small towns), moving beyond the big metro cities where credit cards are already common.
For bank officers, this development shows the growing trend of 'Fintech-Bank' partnerships. Instead of competing, banks are using the fast technology of fintechs to reach new customers. For customers, especially those in rural areas, this provides a safe way to enter the formal banking system. If they handle this FD-backed card well, they will find it easier to get home loans or personal loans in the future because of their improved credit score.
Looking ahead, the industry will watch how quickly these cards are adopted in small towns. The success of this product will depend on how well the digital onboarding works in areas with lower internet speeds. Bankers should keep an eye on how UPI-linked credit cards change the spending habits of the average Indian consumer over the next year.
